Aqua soil

Description

Aqua soil is a clay substrate sold for planted tanks and shrimp tanks. One shrimp soil is sold as a plant and shrimp aquarium substrate, aqua soil for fish tanks. Its listing says what the product is: a premium clay-based substrate that maintains its spherical shape over time without breaking down into compacted soil. It names the uses as planted aquariums, shrimp habitats and aquatic turtle setups, and says it supports healthy plant growth by providing a stable foundation for newly planted and established freshwater aquatic plants. Laboratories use soil in shrimp tanks too. A 2026 study of body colour in the cherry shrimp Neocaridina denticulata sinensis raised its animals in glass tanks of 40 by 30 by 25 cm, where aquarium soil and Elodea nuttallii were added to the glass tank to build a micro-ecosystem, and water quality was maintained by the addition of an appropriate number of nitrifying bacteria. The shrimp in that study is a Neocaridina, not a Caridina.
