Multi-strip test

Description

A multi-parameter test strip is a plastic strip with several reagent pads on it. You dip it, wait, and read each pad against a printed colour chart. Published work uses exactly this and describes the procedure the same way: in a 2025 water study the presence of heavy metal elements in water was detected by water quality test strips, and the strips were immersed in the respective water samples, followed by being placed on a white background for color evaluation. The strip that study names carries sixteen pads on one piece of plastic, which is what the multi in the name means. The strength and the weakness of the method are both published, and they are the reason this page will not tell you a strip is enough. A 2025 paper in Environmental Monitoring and Assessment puts it in one sentence: field tools such as colorimetric test strips offer affordability and accessibility but are prone to subjective interpretation and environmental variability. The same sentence continues that laboratory-based techniques provide high precision but are costly, resource-intensive, and less feasible in decentralized contexts. That is the trade the strip makes, stated by people who tried to fix it. EPA's manual for volunteer stream monitors draws the same line for one parameter, and it is worth reading because it is about a colour comparator rather than a strip: if your program requires a high degree of accuracy and precision in pH results, the pH should be measured with a laboratory quality pH meter and electrode. Colour reading is the cheap, portable method; an electrode is the accurate one. What none of these sources publishes is a reading tolerance, a shelf life or a list of what any particular strip measures, so this page gives none of those. Read a strip as a screening tool that tells you something changed, and confirm anything you intend to act on with a method that does not depend on your eyes and the light in the room.
