A pre-filter sponge is a foam sleeve pushed over a filter's intake. It does one job the filter cannot do for itself, which is keeping small animals out of it. AQUANEAT's listing, one of the two most-rated in our search, puts it plainly: it keeps baby fish, shrimp, and snails from getting sucked into hob filters, power heads or canister filters by simply putting a piece of this pre-filter sponge over the intake. The second listing describes the same use in its own words: the foam can be quickly and easily attached to the fish tank intake tube stem, preventing small or weaker inhabitants from being drawn into the filter. It also takes the coarse debris before the filter does. AQUANEAT says it does a good job in catching flake fish foods, plants and any other large particles floating in the water, and the other seller says the sponges could help to trap particles and debris and prolong the life of your filter media. Fit is the practical detail, and both sellers flag it. The sleeve has a blind hole rather than a tube through it: AQUANEAT notes that the hole does not go all the way through the sponge, and the other listing says the sponges only have a single hole. Sizes are given by the intake they fit. AQUANEAT's is 8 by 4.5 cm with an inside hole diameter of 2 cm, and the seller asks buyers to check the size you need carefully before placing an order; the other is about 8.5 by 5 cm with a 2.1 cm hole. Upkeep is rinsing. AQUANEAT says to rinse the sponge roll periodically based on the bio load of your aquarium tank, and that the material holds up well to being rinsed and reused. Neither seller gives an interval, and this page does not invent one.
