Pantanal Ludwigia

This is a plant that reports on your tank rather than adapting to it. Held at high light with steady CO2, iron, and nitrate, Ludwigia inclinata 'Pantanal' produces narrow, closely spaced leaves in orange through deep crimson. Let any one of those slip and it tells you immediately: lower leaves drop, the stem stretches, and the colour washes out to green.

The form sold under the Pantanal name comes from the Brazilian wetland of that name and differs from standard Ludwigia inclinata in its finer submersed leaves and its colour response. Emersed growth looks broader and plainer, so a plant bought in emersed form will not resemble the photographs until it has converted underwater.

The conditions are narrow. It wants soft acidic water at pH 4.5 to 6.5, temperatures of 22 to 28 °C, CO2 held around 25 mg/l or higher, and a nutrient-rich substrate with iron and nitrate available rather than merely present. Trimming has to be frequent. None of this is beginner territory, and the plant is unforgiving of the parameter swings that come with a young tank. Plant several stems together as a group, since the effect depends on mass. Propagate by cutting and replanting the top section; the lower stem will branch, though older stems tend to decline and are usually replaced rather than kept.
