Dwarf Rotala

Despite the name, the submerged leaves are narrow and pointed — the round leaves the name refers to belong to the emersed form, which looks like a different plant altogether. Rotala rotundifolia is one of the most adaptable stem plants in the hobby, found from soft acidic water to hard alkaline and from tropical tanks down to unheated setups.

Under moderate to strong light the stems grow compact and the leaf colour intensifies, with the top of the stem turning pinkish or red. Lower light produces a taller, greener plant with wider internodes. CO₂ injection is not necessary but produces thicker stems and denser growth.

It accepts temperatures from 22 to 28 °C and pH 4.5 to 8, with the wild tolerance extending far colder. This makes it viable for coldwater and low-tech tanks where most red-tinted stem plants would stall. The growth rate is fast regardless, so regular trimming is the main routine.

Propagation is by cuttings: cut a stem, remove the lower leaves, and replant. The parent plant branches from the cut point, and the cutting roots rapidly. Groups of several stems planted close together produce the best visual effect.
